"Pronunciation of"

LAST EDITED ON Jun-05-03 AT 04:07 PM (EST)

Hi, all!

Does anyone know how Eddie Cicotte's last name was pronounced?
I've heard two versions, both from seemingly authoritative sources.

One source pronounced it as if spelt "Ci COTT EE" (Accent on "COTT," and the final "E" pronounced as in "Tea.")

OR

The other, as if spelt "CEE cot" (Accent on "CEE," and final
"E" is silent.)

Anyone know?

Thanks! Emotion Icons

We have heard it both ways ourselves.......... Our boss Mike Nola pronounces it "CI cott".....but Mr. Nola interviewed Chester Hoff, who at the time he interviewed him was 105 years old and the oldest Major Leaguer still alive.....he played against Jackson and Cicotte....and he pronounced it Ci COTT EE.......so we would suspect that the players in his day pronounced it both ways........

Hope that helps.............

I'm from the same part of Michigan that Eddie was from (southwestern suburbs of Detroit) and went to high school with a couple of generations removed nephew of his, and travelled a few times a week on a road named for another member of his family (can't recall who off the top of my head)and the accepted pronunciation as we always knew it was SEE-cot. Hope that helps.
