>I was listening to an old broadcast of the 1951 >Dodgers-Giants playoff game and the announcer said that Joe >Jackson was the 1st person to hit a Home Run completely out >of the Polo Grounds. Can anyone give me any details of when >this happened and the team he was on and the final score of >the game. THANK YOU Patrick Hogan Troy, NY Joe hit his towering homerun on June 4, 1913. The homerun came in the second inning of the game off Russell Ford. According to the New York Times account; "Joe Jackson, the great slugging outfielder of the Naps, brushed his bat against one of Russell Ford's offerings and drove the ball over the right field stand. the ball passed out of sight a few feet inside the foul line and several feet above the highest section of the upper stand roof. It was later recovered in Manhattan Field, into which it had bounded from the roof. The hit, while perhaps not the longest ever made at the field, has not been approached in this section of the Polo Grounds since the new stands were built." Highlander manager Frank Chance used 4 pitchers in that game (Ford, Warhop, McConnell and Clark), but the Naps hit them all on their way to a 9 to 5 victory.
