"Rose Reinstatement"

I first must apologize, I know this is a Joe Jackson message board, but......

Is the idiot Selig serious about reinstating Rose to MLB??

Why doesnt he take the easy way out and overturn the Rose rule? Pete belongs in the Hall but he belongs no where near a baseball field. What is wrong with the fans though and this recent groundswell of support for "Poor Pete"? I was at game 2 of the 1999 World Series in Atlanta when the alleged "Team of the Century" (do they still think Griffey Jr was a good choice?) was announced. Rose received a louder ovation than Hank Aaron, hometown hero! Amazing, but, I bet the average attendee at a WS game is not a baseball fan, but, a corporate muckey muck that got tickets. Hopefully the living HOF'ers that Selig is meeting with will see through his ruse.

Thanks for allowing me to vent....

Not a problem....the post is related to Joe Jackson...sad as it is.....somehow everyone wants to lump the two men together...even though in our minds..and Selig has even said in his mind...the two are seperate issues......so the post is not a problem

>Is the idiot Selig serious about reinstating Rose to MLB??

Bud is as serious as a heart attack about clearing Rose's name...and the reason why he is......is because he sees it as a popular thing to do......Bud wants to do something to change his image with the fans...and the Good Lord knows he needs to.....we're just not sure he should put Rose ahead of Jackson. In our eyes....Pete has not served his time.....Joe has...and continues to serve it to this day.

Selig cannot overturn the Rose Rule....that was implemented by the Hall of Fame...MLB and the HOF are two seperate entities...so Selig has no authority to overturn that rule. The Hall of Fame would have to overturn Rule 6(e) before Rose would be eligible until he is taken off MLB's ineligible list.

I am afraid that Selig may be softening his position on Pete Rose. When Bud meets with the HOFers on Jan. 17th, he may be swayed in Pete's favor if most of the HOFers speak in favor of Pete's re-instatement. Surely Selig will know that we in the Jackson camp will start roaring if Joe does not get his "day in court" with Selig. Of course, Joe deserves to go in FIRST, (to the HOF), but we will have to wait and see. It is interesting to note that Bill James feels that if the Rose case had ever gone to court, Rose would have been ordered off the ineligible list by the courts. JOE FIRST, NOT ROSE.

On page 355 in James book: THE POLITICS OF GLORY, James states that Dowd leapt to the decision that Rose was guilty, and twisted and bent the facts to support that conclusion. James then goes into a speel explaining how lawyers would have MLB's head on a platter, so to speak. You may want to read Jame's explanation for yourself, I don't particularly like James because of his treatment of Joe Jackson, he can be a pompous jerk.

I'll get that book. Thanks. I do wonder about Bill James ever since he proclaimed that Craig Biggio is the 35th best player in bsaeball history.

Happy Holidays to all...

Bob

What is Bill James' rationale for thinking the courts would rule in favor of Rose? Dowd has even come forward to say that he was close to proving that Rose bet on Reds games. If Rose always bet on the Reds when certain pitchers started and always laid off when others started it sent a clear signal to the gambling world. Rule 21 states that if you bet on baseball games that you are not involved in, automatic 1 year suspension. Bet on games you are involved in, you are automatically on the permanently ineligible list. Rose accepted the punishment, however, they changed the penalty to include being ineligible for the hall. Pete wasn't counting on that.

P.S. Selig has the backbone of an amoeba and is incapable of deciding this or anything else for himself.
