"Outlaw days"

In one of my books, there is a picture of Joe in a BB uniform with an S on the cap, would that be Savannah?? Also, why was Joe's teams called outlaw teams? It seems they were legitmate semi pro teams and such, so why the label??

The picture of Joe with an "S" on his cap is from 1932 when Joe was with the Greenville Spinns. The photo was taken by Greenville photographer William B. Coxe, who also captured Joe hitting a home run during the same game and caught him sitting on the dugout steps before the start of the game.
Now.....the reason for the "outlaw" notation......they were deemed "outlaw leagues" because they were beyond the reach of Major League Baseball and Judge Landis.......Landis had no jurisdiction over these leagues...and hence the name "outlaw" applied. You are correct in your assessment of the professionalism in these leagues.......by
all indications...there were some very good ballplayers playing in these leagues.....and some of those players even went on to play in the big leagues.
